In Curaçao there have been initiatives to commemorate our slavery legacy since the 1960s (*). This is reflected in, among other things, a Tula Park, two expositions (at the National Archives in 2003 and at the Public Library in 2005) and there is a Museum that focuses on slavery (Kura Hulanda). In 2003 there was an International Conference in Curaçao entitled "The African Diaspora' dedicated to the Legacy of Slavery in the Caribbean (UNESCO –The National Archives).
The exposition 'The Legacy of Slavery' –which is a production of World museum Rotterdam, focuses on the African slave trade started by the Dutch and which, to this day, still has its effects on the peoples of the Netherlands Antilles, Surinam and the Netherlands.
The effects in Curaçao are visibly reflected in our people and geography. In order to confront people more directly with these effects, the location of Banda Bou, Landhuis Groot Santa Martha was chosen.

General objective
By means of this exposition, the local organizing team wants to give its contribution to gain a better understanding of the legacy of slavery in our country, to know more about its consequences and achievements in spite of oppression and to reach more intercultural dialogue, more unity in our diversity, more autonomy and more appreciation for our own identity.

Other objectives
  • To gain more knowledge and understanding of a part of our history of slavery, especially of enslaved Africans.
  • To better understand the legacy, with emphasis on cultural riches, that came from various parts of Africa to Curaçao, the Netherlands Antilles, Surinam, the Caribbean (language, beliefs, knowledge, communication forms in rhythm and songs, among other things).
  • To better understand and feel the emotional and psychological effects of more than two centuries of an inhumane system for the Antilles, of racial discrimination, of oppressing cultural and philosophical values of people of African descent (such as the value of respect).
  • To overcome the knowledge gap about the slavery system in Groot St. Marta and the surrounding areas (including Savonet, Kenepa, San Juan, Silberie.
  • To gain more knowledge of the diverse forms of resistance: runaways, (marronage), the different rebellions in Curaçao, our relationship with the region (Haiti, Coro) but also slaves refusing to work or starting their own plantations.
  • To overcome the knowledge gap about the land ownership system and other forms of forced labour.

Specific objective
To involve the current community of Soto, with its different areas; based on the following philosophy: If you don’t know your history, you won’t know yourself and you won’t be able to solve neither your own problems nor your country’s problems.
